The Lyceum Theatre located just off the Strand in London has a rich and varied history having been used as a theatre, ballroom and concert venue.
There has been a theatre on the site since 1765, and the current 1904 building, one of London’s largest and most impressive theatres, retains the imposing portico built in 1834.
Between 1950 and 1980 as the Lyceum Ballroom the venue played host to many bands including The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd and Queen. Bob Marley and the Wailers recorded their Live! album at the theatre in 1975.
In 1996, the theatre reopened after a major refurbishment presenting shows such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstarand Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma.
Disney’s multi-award winning The Lion King opened in 1999 and continues to play to full houses. Now in its twenty first year the show is enjoyed by over 900,000 patrons every year.
